詩人簡介

約瑟夫·羅德雅德·吉卜林 (Joseph Rudyard Kipling)， 1865年12月30日－1936年1月18日，生于印度孟買，英國作家及詩人。主要著作有兒童故事《叢林奇譚》（The Jungle Book，1894年）、印度偵探小說《基姆》（Kim，1901年）、 詩集《營房謠》（Gunga Din，1892年）、短詩《If—》（If—，1895年）以及許多膾炙人口的短篇小說。他是英國19世紀(jì)至20世紀(jì)中一位很受歡迎的散文作家，被譽(yù)為“短篇小說藝術(shù)創(chuàng)新之人”。于 42 歲，1907 年獲得諾貝爾文學(xué)獎，是英國第一個諾貝爾文學(xué)獎獲得者。曾有很多人譴責(zé)吉卜林，說吉卜林在對印度殖民地生活的描繪中，經(jīng)常表露出對殖民主義的支持，認(rèn)為沒有歐洲大國的幫助，印度等殖民地國家就不能生存。

 

而本篇摘錄的詩，是吉卜林寫給他 12 歲兒子的，來告誡兒子如何才能經(jīng)受住人生旅途中可能遇到的種種精神上的考驗(yàn)。

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you；

 

如果周圍的人毫無理性地向你發(fā)難，你仍能鎮(zhèn)定自若保持冷靜；

 

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you，

But make allowance for their doubting too；
